Cauliflower Ravioli from Graffiato; Richmond, VA

This space has always had a ton of potential, so I’m glad to see the transformation that Mike Isabella and his team has made - cause let’s face it, Popkin really sucked. This is Graffiato’s second location - the first being in DC’s Chinatown. They serve small plates and pizzas.

This ravioli was OK, but it wasn’t very hot, and the flavors weren’t spectacular, but I’m going to give them the benefit of the doubt - it was their first night open. The cool part was that they have complimentary sparkling water! The un-cool part was that we never knew what we were going to get every time someone refilled our glasses. My friends and me ended our night with our glasses half full of sparkling water and half full of still. I guess it could’ve been worse, but it also could’ve been better…

Drip Coffee from The Lab by Alchemy Coffee; Richmond, VA

To most Richmond coffee-drinkers, Alchemy is known for it’s sweet, wood-paneled mobile cart that traverses the city making top-notch coffee and espresso drinks for the people of RVA. Now, in addition to their sweet cart, Alchemy has put down roots on Broad street, making it easier to grab a cup at any time of the day. The Lab is a great space and is an awesome addition to the block. In my opinion, Alchemy has done it right from day one, so if you haven’t already, go see what they’re all about.

Grilled Cheese from Metzger Bar & Butchery; Richmond, VA

This grilled cheese is anything but simple. First of all, it is in fact grilled, making the freshly baked bread deliciously crunchy. They use an Appenzeller cheese, which is a type of Swiss cheese that has a mild, fruity flavor. They also add apple butter, basil and a grainy mustard, and serve it with a great side salad. Metzger is a very cool little place near a very large Baptist church, so be ready when you go for Sunday brunch - there isn’t a lot of nearby parking. Even though this is a butchery, there are vegetarian options. So if meat isn’t your thing, you’ll be happy, and if meat is your thing, you’ll be VERY happy.

Pesto & Tomato Slice from Christian’s Pizza; Richmond, VA

This pizza was very tasty. It stands out among other pies in town because of it’s crispy crunchy crust and it’s quick line-and you can get any of their house favorite pizzas by the slice. Also, after 11pm you can get a slice of cheese or pepperoni for under $3. Hello late night treat, I think I love you.

Broccoli & Potato Knish with Cheese Sauce from Perly’s; Richmond, VA

This knish is delish. It’s really flavorful and the portion is huge- it’s technically an appetizer but it can definitely be a meal on its own. That cheese sauce is incredible and totally makes the dish.

Homemade Tortillas

Can I get an Usher OMG for these delicious handmade tortillas made with Bob’s Red Mill masa?! Once you make them yourself, you won’t go back to store bought tortillas and you may even balk at the idea of going out to eat for tacos. These are the easiest. Just buy yourself a tortilla press and some masa and you will have tacos for days.

Vegetarian Taco & Fish Taco from Pelon’s Baja Grill; Richmond, VA

The fish taco was decent- definitely better than the veg taco and the salsa definitely left something to be desired. On a more positive note, their queso was good!…I have yet to find/have delicious, authentic Mexican in Richmond made with quality ingredients. For now, Chipotle has my vote.

Lentil Soup from Edo’s Squid; Richmond, VA

This is a very comforting and flavorful soup. Tastes great with Edo’s bread and an entire bottle of $18 Montepulciano.

Pancakes w/ Blueberry Compote from Can Can Brasserie; Richmond, VA
Fluffy but overpriced. For $8.50, these pancakes should be made of gold. Or at the very least use a fancy flour or put fancy ingredients inside. What about lemon and ricotta? Poppy seed and lemon? Or even banana and add some walnuts on top? When I was a kid, my dad made Bisquick stacks better than this. Sorry Can Can…
